Data conversion: need to convert data files to a different format. For example, if you are switching software systems, your old data may be exported from your old system into an Excel file, but your new system only accepts comma delimited text files. The Excel files need to be converted into .csv files (flat files).

Data clean-up: data files have fields with incorrect values that need to be deleted and/or replaced.

Data consolidation: required information is scattered on two or more files. The organization needs this data consolidated in one file. The task is to have fields from different files in one file.

Data modification: original file has multiple fields. Need to create additional fields based on the existing ones, using either mathematical formulas or merging data from multiple fields into one.

Data entry: data needs to be added into a file based on a specific template. This includes manual keying of information or automated entry of data (cut and paste, import/export, etc.).
